Mark Allen Howell

Ind. - Mark Allen Howell, age 65, passed away Wednesday morning, April 12, 2023, at his home in Centerville, Indiana. Born April 4, 1958, he was the son of James Ivan Howell and Marjorie Ann (Hensel) Howell. A lifelong educator and champion of student athletics, Mark was best known in the Wayne County community for his time as Centerville High School Athletic Director—a position he held for 25 years (1995–2020). During his 40-year career in public education, Mark also taught, coached, and/or held administrative positions at Connersville High School, Union County High School, and Lincoln High School. He achieved his ultimate goal of returning to his alma mater (Centerville) and cherished the time he had with so many wonderful students, parents, and community members. Mark received his bachelor’s and master’s degree from Ball State University. He gave both time and care to his community, serving as a Lions Club member and an elder at Centerville Christian Church. Mark also served on the Parent Council Board of Butler University, building a strong connection to the school following his youngest son’s enrollment there. His love for sports did not end at the high school level, as he enjoyed watching Colts, Purdue, and IU games regularly. In recent years, Mark loved his time on the golf course. He enjoyed traveling with his wife and family, especially to Arizona and Las Vegas. Mark is survived by his parents; his loving wife of 39 years, Cinda Lynn (Goar) Howell, of Centerville; two sons, Ryan Allen (Molly) Howell of Carmel, Indiana, and Chandler Wayne Howell, of Indianapolis; brother, Bradley James (Deborah) Howell, of West Harrison, Indiana; his in-laws, Dan and Carol Goar, of Hagerstown; sister-in-law Cheryl (Nick) Koury of Phoenix, Arizona; his nephew and niece, Chase (Andrea) Howell and Chelsea (Michael) Berkery; two “fur baby” grandchildren, Murphy and Ares; and loving extended family. Mark’s family would like to extend their sincerest thanks to the healthcare professionals at IU Health Central Indiana Cancer Centers (Rama Drive), Reid Health, and Reid Health Hospice. Visitation for Mark A. Howell will be held on Sunday, April 16, 2023, from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. at Centerville Christian Church, 111 N. Morton Avenue, Centerville, IN. A funeral service will be held at 10:00 am on Monday, April 17, 2023, at Centerville Christian Church with Chaplain Rick Alvey officiating. Burial will follow at Crown Hill Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be given to the Centerville High School Athletic Department, in memory of Mark Allen Howell, 507 Willow Grove Rd., Centerville, Indiana 47330.
