Melvin J. "Mel" Hartman

RICHMOND, Ind. – Melvin J. "Mel" Hartman, age 74, of Richmond, died Sunday, June 29, 2014, at Reid Hospital. Mel was born March 27, 1940, in Richmond, to Delbert and Edith Stremmel Hartman. He graduated from Richmond High School. Mel and his wife Judy were very proud to have raised their children in Centerville. Mel worked at Perfect Circle/Dana Corporation, retiring in 1998. He was a very active and instrumental member of the Centerville Church of the Nazarene and the Richmond First Church of the Nazarene. Mel was a former school board member and President of Centerville-Abington School Board. He was a long-time member and volunteer of the Centerville Youth League. Mel enjoyed following IU basketball, Green Bay Packers, and watching Fox News. He was very patriotic and loved his country. Mel was a hard worker and very generous. He was all about his faith, family, and friends. Survivors include his wife, Judy Kinder Hartman, to whom he was married on August 8, 1959; children, David (Susie) Hartman of Crossville, Tennessee, Brenda (Avery) Wright of Crossville, Tennessee, John (Lisa) Hartman of Centerville, and Valerie (Ken) Relos of Plymouth, Indiana; grandchildren, Chrissy, Allen, Nikki, Mitchel, Ryan, Lindsey, Katie, Hannah, and Sarah; 19 great-grandchildren; sisters, Marilyn Brockman of Arizona and Marcia (Harold) VanWinkle of Richmond; brother-in-law, Rod Prifogle of Richmond; cousins; nieces; nephews; and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; grandchildren, Eric Hartman and Tom Relos; brothers, Mac, Merle, and Marvin Hartman; sister, Myra Prifogle; and other extended family. Visitation for Melvin J. "Mel" Hartman will be from 1 to 3:00 p.m. Thursday, July 3, 2014, at Doan & Mills Funeral Home, 790 National Road West, Richmond. Funeral service will follow at 3:00 p.m. Thursday, July 3, 2014, at Doan & Mills Funeral Home with Rev. Robert Malone officiating. Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery.
