Nilah Louise Thornburg Price Snyder

NILAH LOUISE THORNBURG PRICE SNYDER, 94, of Friends Fellowship Community, Richmond, died Friday, September 10, 2010. She was born February 27, 1916, on the family farm in Winchester, Ind., the ninth daughter of Oko Otway Thornburg and Luella (MacDonald) Thornburg. In 1929 the family moved to Richmond, where she graduated from Morton High School in 1934. She attended Earlham College (1934-35) and Richmond Business College, afterward taking a job with the American Friends Service Committee in Philadelphia (Emergency Peace Campaign, 1936-37; genealogy research from Quaker records for William Wade Hinshaw, 1937-39). In Philadelphia, she met her first husband, Walter S. Price, a student at Jefferson Medical College. They were married in 1938. Following WWII, the couple settled in Brookville, Ohio, with Walter maintaining a medical practice in nearby Phillipsburg. In 1961, the family relocated to Indianapolis. Following Walter’s death in 1967, Nilah worked for the Metropolitan School District of Washington Township. In 1973, she married Orval G. Snyder, vice president and general manager of Richmond Baking Company. They resided in Richmond and were active in the local community. He died in 1993. She was preceded in death by husbands, Walter and Orval; seven sisters, Cleo Malone, Opal Thornburg, Veda Rockhill, Vera Huber, Marjorie Bennett, Dorothy Fausy and Hazel Emry; and a son, Philip Thornburg Price. She is survived by sisters, Mildred Weadick of Richmond, Ind., and Ruthmary Wright of Mesa, Ariz.; son, Thomas R. Price II (Patricia) of Indianapolis; daughter, Barbara Price Monahan (John) of New Haven, Conn.; daughter-in-law, Kay DuFur Price of San Marcos, Calif.; stepdaughter, Demaris Snyder Wehr, (David Hart) of Martha’s Vineyard, Mass.; stepsons, Timothy Snyder of Frostburg, Md., Terrence Snyder and Dan Snyder, both of Black Mountain, N.C.; 19 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 3:30 p.m., Saturday, September 18, at First Friends Meeting, 2010 Chester Blvd., Richmond, with Douglas Gwyn officiating. Reception to follow.
