Rev. Frederick E. Cox

RICHMOND, Ind. – Rev. Frederick E. Cox, age 66, of Richmond, died Monday, May 26, 2008, at Seton Specialty Hospital in Indianapolis. Born April 14, 1942, in Seymour, Ind., to Aaron E. and Olive C. Becker Cox, he lived in the area since 1978. Fred was a 1960 graduate of Seymour Senior High School and earned a Bachelors of Music Education Degree from Indiana University in 1965, Master of Music Degree from Michigan State in 1971, and Master of Divinity Degree from United Theological Seminary of Dayton in 1981. He was a teacher and band director for Jasper School Corporation from 1965–1967, Grand Rapids Michigan School Corporation from 1967–1969, and Jac-Cen-Del School Corporation from 1973–1978. Fred served the following churches: 1978–1981 Lewisville/Dublin United Methodist Church, 1981-1986 Associate Minister of Central United Methodist Church in Richmond, 1986–1990 Associate Minister of First United Methodist Church in New Castle, 1990–2000 Edwards Memorial United Methodist Church in Liberty, and 2000–2003 First United Methodist Church in Hagerstown. Fred was an Elder of the South Indiana Conference of the United Methodist Church; 33rd Degree Mason of Line Lodge of Jasper, Indiana; Indianapolis Valley of Scottish Rite; Study Buddy at Charles Elementary School; and volunteer at Reid Hospital. He attended Central United Methodist Church and was a member of the Chancel Choir and Wesley Ringers. He was a big sports fan and loved spending time with his grandchildren. Survivors include his wife, Sandra L. Wernimont Cox to whom he was married June 25, 1966; sons, Philip Cox and his wife Lisa of Liberty, Matthew Cox and his wife Nikki of Liberty, and Mark Cox and his wife Kenyatta of Richmond; five grandchildren, Emma and Sara Cox of Liberty, Gabriel and Grant Cox of Liberty, and Noa Cox of Richmond; sister, Maureen Burns and her husband Steve of Greensboro, North Carolina; niece; nephew; cousins; and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents. Visitation for Rev. Frederick E. Cox will be from 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, May 28, 2008, at Central United Methodist Church, 1425 East Main Street, Richmond with a Masonic Memorial Service at 3:30 p.m. Funeral service will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 29, 2008, at the church with Rev. Phil Dorrell, Rev. Scott Bell, and Rev. Eldon Harzman officiating. Burial will be in Earlham Cemetery. Doan & Mills Funeral Home, 790 National Road W., Richmond is in charge of arrangements.
