Russell W. Carter Sr.

RICHMOND, Ind. – Russell W. Carter Sr., age 88, of Richmond, died Wednesday, March 11, 2015, at Reid Hospital. Born November 2, 1926, in Cincinnati, Ohio, to Kathleen “Kay” Carter, Russ lived most of his life in Mason, Ohio. He was an Electrician’s Mate in the U.S. Navy from 1943-1946 and a World War II veteran, having taken part in the Okinawa Invasion and Occupational Force in Japan. Russ was a Postmaster for many years and then was a Bulk Mail Center Safety Director, having worked for USPS for over 35 years. He was the Mason School Board President and County Draft Board President in Lebanon, Ohio. Russ was commissioned a Kentucky Colonial on September 13, 1983, commissioned an Admiral by the State of Kentucky Department of Transportation, and recognized by the Mason Kiwanis Club for his contribution to the community. After retirement, Russ worked at Sears and Meijer part-time. He moved to Richmond in 2002. Russ was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church. He started painting later in life, and enjoyed painting at the Richmond Senior Community Center. Russ won several 1st place ribbons at the county and state fairs for his paintings. Survivors include his wife of 34 years, Jean Carter, to whom he was married on September 3, 1980; sons, Russ (Toni) Carter Jr. of Mason, Ohio, Kevin (Bonnie) Carter of Columbia, South Carolina, and Barry (Sam) Carter of Mason, Ohio; step-daughters, Karen (Ross) Bazzle of Charlotte, North Carolina, and Sandi (Doug) Mathews of Liberty, Indiana; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and many friends. He was preceded in death by his mother; brother, John Carter; step-daughter, Susan Berryman; and step-son, Chip Jackson. Visitation for Russell W. Carter Sr. will be from 10 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Saturday, March 14, 2015, at Mills Funeral Home, 405 East Main Street, Centerville. Funeral service will follow at 12:00 p.m. Saturday, March 14, 2015, at Mills Funeral Home with Dr. Martin Holman and Dr. Frank Holman officiating. Burial will be in Crown Hill Cemetery with military honors provided by the Wayne County Honor Guard.
