Sam Hogenauer

CENTERVILLE, Ind. – Sam Hogenauer, age 67, of Centerville, passed away peacefully at home with his loving wife, Lee, on Monday, July 7, 2014. Sam was born on August 6, 1946, in Newton, New Jersey, to Eugene F. and Mary (Owsley) Hogenauer. After attending Westtown School and majoring in history at Earlham College, he worked at Reid Hospital for 24 years. Sam was an avid reader who enjoyed his weekly sessions reading to children at Westview School. As a volunteer in the Richmond/Centerville communities, Sam was instrumental in supporting Help the Animals Shelter where he was a board member and jack of all trades; he engaged in a fundraising walk with his and shelter dogs for several years. He was a member of Kiwanis, served on the Salvation Army board, and was on the board of Historic Centerville, Inc. As an alumnus of Earlham, he served as the president of the E-Club, was a member of the Alumni Council, acted as an assistant football coach, and was a faithful cheerleader on the sidelines of all sporting events at the college. On December 28, 1973, he married the former Eleanor Lee Douglas in the Meeting House in West Falmouth, Massachusetts. In addition to his wife, Sam is survived by four siblings: Kim Lade of Fon du Lac, Wisconsin; Dan Hogenauer of San Antonio, Texas; Margaret (Larry) McCormick of Traverse City, Michigan; and Barry (Mary Sommer) Hogenauer of Mystic, Connecticut. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Special thanks and appreciation are extended to Dr. Heather Riggs and the entire staff at Reid Cancer Center for their caring spirit throughout Sam’s illness. Sam’s wish to donate his body to the IU School of Medicine was honored. Private family memorials will be held in Massachusetts and Michigan.
