Sara Alice DeHaven

RICHMOND, Ind. – Sara Alice Kerlin DeHaven, age 91, of Richmond, died Saturday, June 22, 2013, at Friends Fellowship Community. Alice was born January 5, 1922, in Richmond to James Franklin and Mary Josephine “Clifford” Kerlin. Following the death of both parents, she was raised by her aunt and uncle, Charlie and Alice Kerlin, and lived all of her life in Richmond. Alice attended Morton High School and was a member of the first class to graduate from Richmond Senior High School in 1940. During World War II, Alice was employed as an Instrument Repair Mechanic at Wright Patterson Field. On October 9, 1943, she married Thomas A. DeHaven, a member of the U.S. Navy. Following the end of the war, they moved back to Richmond. Alice was a member of the former Earlham Heights Presbyterian Church, where she was an elder, and currently a member of First Presbyterian Church. She was PTA President of the Baxter and Westview Schools, when her sons were young, and a member of the Opti-Mrs. Club and Friendly Oldies. Survivors include her two sons, Jerry (Marcia) DeHaven of Houston, Texas, and Michael (Wanda) DeHaven of St. Louis, Missouri; three grandchildren, Kyle (Catherine) DeHaven, Scott DeHaven, and Abigail (Travis) Sarich; great-granddaughter, Hazel Alice DeHaven; sister-in-law, Martha Olson of Minneapolis, Minnesota; nieces, including special niece Carolyn Nicholson; nephews; and a special friend, JoAnn Horn Deer. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas A. DeHaven, who died August 8, 2003; son, Patrick DeHaven; grandson, Matthew DeHaven; uncle and aunt, Charlie and Alice Kerlin; three sisters, Annabelle Davis, Margaret Dean, and Nellie Off; and sister-in-law, Minerva Stevens. Visitation for Sara Alice Kerlin DeHaven will be from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 26, 2013, at Doan & Mills Funeral Home, 790 National Road West, Richmond. Funeral service will follow at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 26, 2013, at Doan & Mills Funeral Home with Pastor John H. Hollis and Pastor David A. Layman officiating. Burial will be in Earlham Cemetery.
