Tom H. Ebbinghouse, M.D.

RICHMOND, Ind. – Tom H. Ebbinghouse, M.D., age 94, of Richmond, died Wednesday, October 8, 2014, at his residence. Tom was born on August 22, 1920, in West Middletown, Ohio, to Homer S. and Grace Hendricks Ebbinghouse. He graduated from Chester High School in North Manchester, Indiana, attended Manchester College, and graduated from Indiana University. In 1945 Tom graduated from Indiana University School of Medicine. He served as a Captain in the United States Army Medical Corp. Following his discharge from the Army, Tom completed a family practice residency in Memphis, Tennessee. In 1949, he established a family practice in Richmond and practiced for forty-two years. Tom’s wife, Annadell, was by his side as his nurse in his office for twenty-seven years. He loved his patients and spent a lifetime of service helping other people. Tom was a board certified member of the American Academy of Family Practice. He was a member of the Wayne County Medical Society, the Indiana State Medical Society, the American Academy of Family Practice, the Kiwanis Club of Richmond, and Central United Methodist Church. Tom served on the board of the Wayne County Mental Health Association as well as numerous committees at Reid Memorial Hospital. His hobbies included photography, woodworking, boating, and water skiing. Tom was an Eagle Scout and encouraged his family members to achieve the rank of Eagle. He was the first of eventually nine Eagles, which was every male in three generations. Tom was awarded the Silver Beaver for his service to scouting. Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Annadell Sparks Ebbinghouse; sons, David (Marilyn) Ebbinghouse of Bloomington, Indiana, Richard Ebbinghouse of Indianapolis, Indiana, and Tom S. (Jennifer) Ebbinghouse of Indianapolis, Indiana; grandsons, Tyler, Connor, Adam, and Alexander; brother, Dr. Joe Ebbinghouse of Jacksonville, Florida; brother-in-law, Richard Sparks of Bradenton, Florida; nieces; nephews; and many friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and daughter-in-law, Evie Ebbinghouse. The family would like to thank the caregivers at Clarity Personal Care Services and Reid Hospice, who gave him such loving care. “In quietness and in confidence shall be your strength.” Isaiah 30:15. Visitation for Tom H. Ebbinghouse, M.D. will be from 4 to 8:00 p.m. Friday, October 10, 2014, at Doan & Mills Funeral Home, 790 National Road West, Richmond. Funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, October 11, 2014, at Central United Methodist Church, 1425 East Main Street, with Rev. Kerry O’Brien officiating. Burial will be in Earlham Cemetery with military honors provided by the Wayne County Honor Guard.
